Aditya Parameswaran joined the I School and EECS department as an assistant professor in July 2019.
Prior to joining the I School he was an Assistant Professor in Computer Science at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, and prior to that spent a year as a postdoctoral researcher at MIT CSAIL.
He is the recipient of numerous awards and author of many publications. In Spring 2020 he will be teaching a course tentatively titled: “Human-in-the-Loop Data Management.”
Degrees
Ph.D. in Computer Science (Stanford, 2013), B.Tech in Computer Science and Engineering (IIT Bombay, 2007)
Research Interests
Interactive (or “human-in-the-loop”) data analytics and data science, information extraction, integration, and visualization, crowdsourcing and collaborative data science.
Fun Facts
If I could have coffee/tea with someone... The duo of John Tukey (a proponent of “exploratory data analysis” as a discipline) and Ted Codd (inventor of the relational model, the basis for database systems). I wonder if they would have envisioned their disciplines converging today.
I prefer *information* over *data*
My best day would include... Caffeine-fueled thinking, reading, and writing at a coffee shop in the morning, animated technical discussions with students and colleagues in the afternoon, and rocket yoga (invented right across the pond in San Francisco!) and cooking in the evening. Throw in some snuggles with baby animals in there somewhere, and I’ll be golden!
My motivation to get out of bed in the morning... The quest to democratize access to data for everyone!
Favorite course you’ve ever taken or taught
I’ve greatly enjoyed teaching my course titled “Human-in-the-loop Data Management” (a previous offering at Illinois), a heady mix of papers in databases, systems, visualization, and human-computer-interaction as it pertains to aiding humans during the data science life-cycle.
